George D. Wallace
George Corley Wallace Jr. (August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998) was an American politician who served as the 45th governor of Alabama for four terms. He is notorious for his staunch segregationist and populist views. During his tenure as governor, Wallace focused on promoting industrial development, low taxes, and trade schools. He ran for the United States presidency four times, three as a Democratic Party candidate and once as an American Independent Party candidate, but was unsuccessful. Wallace opposed desegregation and supported the policies of 'Jim Crow' during the Civil Rights Movement. Born in Clio, Alabama, Wallace attended the University of Alabama School of Law and served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He later became a state judge.
