Gerry Adams
Gerry Adams (born 6 October 1948) is an Irish republican politician and former president of Sinn Féin. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Louth from 2011 to 2020 and followed a policy of abstentionism as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Belfast West constituency from 1983 to 1992 and 1997 to 2011. Adams became involved in Irish republicanism in the late 1960s and played a significant role in the Northern Ireland peace process from the late 1980s onwards. He engaged in talks with Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) leader John Hume as well as the Irish and British governments. Adams survived an assassination attempt in 1984 by gunmen from the Ulster Defence Association (UDA).
