Gregory Oliver Hines (February 14, 1946 – August 9, 2003) was an American dancer, actor, choreographer, and singer. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tap dancers in history. Hines had an extensive acting career, appearing in over 40 films and starring in Broadway productions. He is best known for his roles in movies such as Wolfen (1981), The Cotton Club (1984), White Nights (1985), and Running Scared (1986). Hines also had notable television appearances, including The Gregory Hines Show (1997–1998) and Will & Grace (1999–2000), where he played the character of Ben. Additionally, he provided the voice for Big Bill on the animated children's show Little Bill (1999–2004). Throughout his career, Hines received numerous awards and nominations, including a Daytime Emmy Award, a Drama Desk Award, a Tony Award, and nominations for a Screen Actors Guild Award and four Primetime Emmy Awards. Gregory Hines was born and raised in New York City and began tap dancing at the age of two.
