Harold Hayes
Harold Hayes (April 18, 1926 – April 5, 1989) was an American editor and a key figure in the New Journalism movement. Born in Elkin, North Carolina, Hayes graduated from Wake Forest College and began his career with United Press in Atlanta. He later moved to New York City and joined the staff of Esquire magazine in 1956. Hayes rose through the ranks to become the editor of Esquire in 1963. After leaving Esquire, he hosted a public television interview program and worked as an editorial producer for 20/20. Hayes also served as the editorial director of CBS magazines and editor of California magazine. He authored several books on Africa.
