Herbie Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American jazz musician, bandleader, and composer. He began his career as part of Donald Byrd's group and later joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he played a crucial role in redefining the role of a jazz rhythm section. Hancock's experimentation with jazz fusion, funk, and electro styles in the 1970s resulted in the release of his influential album, Head Hunters. He is known for his compositions such as 'Cantaloupe Island,' 'Watermelon Man,' 'Maiden Voyage,' and 'Chameleon.' Hancock has received numerous accolades including an Academy Award and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for his tribute album River: The Joni Letters (2007).
