    Ira Glasser, born on April 18, 1938, is a prominent figure known for his extensive work as the fifth executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) from 1978 to 2001. He was born in Brooklyn, New York and obtained a graduate degree in mathematics from Ohio State University. Glasser began his career as a mathematics teacher at Queens College and Sarah Lawrence College in the early 1960s. Later, he joined the New York Civil Liberties Union as an associate director in 1967, eventually becoming the executive director in 1970. Under his leadership, the ACLU expanded its reach and became a nationwide civil liberties powerhouse. Glasser's remarkable life was the subject of the 2020 documentary 'Mighty Ira.'
