John Monaghan (6 August 1921 – 3 July 2022) was a New Zealand amateur wrestler. He represented his country at the 1950 British Empire Games and the 1954 World Wrestling Championships, winning 10 national wrestling titles. Born in Mataura on 6 August 1921, Monaghan grew up in the district and held various jobs including delivery boy, shepherd, and fireman for New Zealand Railways. After enlisting for military service in 1940 and serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy, he trained as a stoker and served in HMS Tintagel Castle during World War II. Monaghan's wrestling career showcased his talent and dedication to the sport.
