Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi (جمال أحمد خاشقجي, ; 13 October 1958 – 2 October 2018) was a Saudi journalist, dissident, author, and columnist for Middle East Eye and The Washington Post. He served as editor for the Saudi Arabian newspaper Al Watan, transforming it into a platform for Saudi progressives. In September 2017, Khashoggi fled Saudi Arabia and went into self-imposed exile due to a ban from Twitter and wrote critical newspaper articles about the Saudi government. He was assassinated on 2 October 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, allegedly by Saudi government agents under the orders of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Khashoggi had been a vocal critic of the Saudi rulers and opposed their intervention in Yemen.
