James Cronin
James Watson Cronin (September 29, 1931 – August 25, 2016) was an American particle physicist. He is best known for his groundbreaking work in the field of subatomic particles. Along with his co-researcher Val Logsdon Fitch, Cronin was awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics for their experiment in 1964, which demonstrated that certain subatomic reactions do not adhere to fundamental symmetry principles. This discovery led to the understanding that the interactions of subatomic particles are not invariant under time reversal, a phenomenon known as CP violation. Cronin was also the recipient of several other prestigious awards and honors, including the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award in 1976 and the National Medal of Science in 1999. He served as a Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago.
