James Ellroy, born Lee Earle Ellroy on March 4, 1948, is an American crime fiction writer and essayist. He is known for his unique telegrammatic prose style, characterized by short, staccato sentences and the omission of connecting words. Notable works include the novels The Black Dahlia (1987) and L.A. Confidential (1990). Born in Los Angeles, Ellroy's parents divorced when he was young, leading him and his mother to move to El Monte, California. Despite these personal challenges, Ellroy went on to become a celebrated and influential figure in the world of crime fiction.
