James Austin Gleason (May 23, 1882 – April 12, 1959) was an American actor, playwright, and screenwriter. Born in New York City, Gleason came from a theatrical background and began his stage career at a young age. After serving in the United States Army, he pursued a career in films, initially writing dialogue for comedies. Gleason went on to act in numerous Broadway plays, including some of his own works. Throughout his career, he was known for portraying tough-talking, world-weary characters with a secret heart-of-gold. Gleason's talent and versatility made him a sought-after actor in both movies and television.
