James Mansfield

Sir James Mansfield (originally Manfield; 10 May 1734 – 23 November 1821) was a British lawyer, judge, and politician. He served as Chief Justice of the Common Pleas from 1799 to 1814, along with being twice Solicitor General. Mansfield's private life was somewhat guarded, with little known about his personal affairs. He married Grace in 1765 and had six children, although only one is believed to have survived into adulthood. He also had five children with another partner. Mansfield attended Eton and King's College, Cambridge, where he obtained his BA and MA degrees. He pursued a successful career in law, being admitted to the Middle Temple and called to the bar.
