    James Tsai, also known as Tsai Jen-chien, is a Taiwanese politician and former mayor of Hsinchu. Born on October 27, 1952, Tsai was a co-founder of the Democratic Progressive Party and served as the DPP caucus leader. He also served on the National Assembly from 1992 to 1997. In 1997, Tsai was elected as the mayor of Hsinchu and became the first elected local government leader from Taiwan to visit China in October 2000. However, he lost his bid for re-election in 2001 and attempted to run again in 2014 as an independent candidate after being expelled from the DPP. Throughout his career, Tsai faced accusations of corruption during his mayoral term.
