James Upton

James Upton (3 May 1888 − 10 August 1949) was a British Army soldier and recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy. Upton served as a corporal in the 1st Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters during the First World War. He was awarded the VC for his actions at the battle of Aubers Ridge on 9 May 1915. Despite being exposed to rifle and artillery fire, Upton rescued wounded soldiers, going close to the enemy's parapet. He also provided medical aid to the injured. Upton's Victoria Cross is on display at the Sherwood Foresters Museum in Nottingham, England.
