Jerome Hayden Powell, also known as Jay Powell, is an American attorney and investment banker. Born on February 4, 1953, Powell has been serving as the 16th chair of the Federal Reserve since 2018. He earned a degree in politics from Princeton University in 1975 and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979. Powell started his career in investment banking in 1984 and worked for various financial institutions. He served as a partner at The Carlyle Group and founded Severn Capital Partners in 2005. Powell briefly served as the under secretary of the Treasury for domestic finance under President George H. W. Bush in 1992. He became a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 2012 and was later appointed as chairman by President Donald Trump, succeeding Janet Yellen.
