Jim McGreevey, born on August 6, 1957, is an American politician and former governor of New Jersey. He served as the 52nd governor of the state from 2002 until his resignation in 2004. Prior to becoming governor, McGreevey held various political positions including serving in the New Jersey General Assembly, as the mayor of Woodbridge Township, and in the New Jersey Senate. He was the Democratic nominee for Governor of New Jersey in 1997 but was narrowly defeated. McGreevey was elected governor in 2001. During his tenure, he appointed Golan Cipel as homeland security advisor, which led to controversy due to Cipel's lack of relevant experience. McGreevey publicly announced his homosexuality and extramarital relationship in August 2004 and subsequently resigned from office.
