Jimmy Hamilton
Jimmy Hamilton (May 25, 1917 – September 20, 1994) was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist, known for his time as a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Born in Dillon, South Carolina, he grew up in Philadelphia and began his musical journey playing piano and brass instruments before focusing on clarinet and saxophone. Hamilton studied under clarinet teacher Leon Russianoff and in the 1930s played with local bands. He went on to perform with notable musicians such as Lucky Millinder, Teddy Wilson, Eddie Heywood, and Yank Porter. In 1943, Hamilton joined the Duke Ellington orchestra, replacing Barney Bigard, and remained with them until 1968. He showcased different styles on tenor saxophone and clarinet, blending R&B sounds with technical precision. Hamilton also composed his own music during his tenure with Ellington.
