Joe Childs Biography
Joe Childs (1884–1958) was a French-born, British-based flat racing jockey. He had a 35-year career and won fifteen British Classics. Childs was known for his slow, waiting race style and for his short temper, which often caused conflicts with trainers and owners. Born into a racing family in Chantilly, his father and grandfather were also involved in racing. Joe was the most successful of four jockey brothers, with Charles also achieving success by winning the 1916 St. Leger. Childs married Emily Lavis, who came from a racing family as well. They had one child, Joey, who passed away in 1916.
