Joe Metcalf

Joe Bailey Metcalf (August 11, 1901 – September 7, 1979) was an American football coach who served as the head football coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University from 1952 to 1957. During his tenure, he achieved a record of 32–21–2 for the Bulldogs. Prior to his college coaching career, Metcalf coached notable figures such as Darrell Royal and Ted Owens on the Hollis, Oklahoma Tigers football team. He also coached Owens in basketball, instilling in him the importance of the set shot over the jump shot. Metcalf's coaching principles continued to influence Royal even after his retirement as head coach of the Texas Longhorns in 1976. His legacy lives on through the impact he made on these renowned individuals.
