John C. McLaughlin
John C. McLaughlin (1921-2013) was an American philologist and professor. Born in Albany, New York on December 1, 1921, McLaughlin served in World War II from 1942 to 1946 as a heavy machine gun platoon leader. He received a Purple Heart and four battle stars for his service in the Solomon Islands and the Philippines. After the war, McLaughlin pursued a career in academia, earning a master's degree in 1952 from the University of Toledo and a Ph.D. in 1960 from Indiana University. He served as Professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Iowa for 35 years. McLaughlin passed away at his home.
