John Edwards is an American lawyer and former politician. He was born on June 10, 1953. Edwards served as a U.S. senator from North Carolina and was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2004. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in both 2004 and 2008. Edwards defeated incumbent Republican Lauch Faircloth in North Carolina's 1998 Senate election. After his term as senator, he focused on the 2004 presidential campaign as the running mate of John Kerry. Following their loss, Edwards worked at the One America Committee and became the director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University.
