John Paul Stevens

John Paul Stevens (April 20, 1920 – July 16, 2019) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1975 to 2010. He is known for his long tenure on the Court, making him the second-oldest justice and the third-longest-serving justice in its history. Stevens wrote on various issues of American law, such as civil liberties, the death penalty, government action, and intellectual property. Despite being a registered Republican, Stevens was considered to have been on the liberal side of the Court. Born in Chicago, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and graduated from Northwestern University School of Law before co-founding a law firm in Chicago.
