John Rapson

John Rapson (February 4, 1953 - July 21, 2021) was an American jazz trombonist and educator. Born in Gary, Indiana, Rapson began playing piano at a young age before transitioning to the trombone. He studied at Westmont College and obtained his MA in composition from California State University. Rapson taught at Westmont from 1980 to 1990 while simultaneously performing with notable jazz musicians in Los Angeles. He later moved to the East Coast and continued his studies at Wesleyan University. Throughout his career, Rapson led various ensembles and collaborated with renowned jazz artists. He made significant contributions to the West Coast jazz scene and will be remembered for his talent and dedication to music.
