John Sloan
John Sloan (August 2, 1871 – September 7, 1951) was an American painter and etcher, known for his contributions to the Ashcan school of American art and his affiliation with The Eight. Born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, Sloan grew up in Philadelphia before moving to New York City in 1904. He is renowned for his urban genre scenes, especially his ability to capture the essence of neighborhood life in New York City. Sloan's work is characterized by his realist style and his interest in social issues, although he separated his art from his politics. Considered the premier artist of the Ashcan School, Sloan left a lasting impact on American art.
