Katha Pollitt (born October 14, 1949) is an American poet, essayist, and critic. With a left-leaning perspective, she has authored four essay collections and two books of poetry. Pollitt's writing delves into political and social issues such as abortion, racism, feminism, poverty, and welfare reform. Born in Brooklyn Heights, New York, she was raised by a lawyer father and a real estate agent mother who nurtured her passion for poetry. Pollitt obtained a B.A. in philosophy from Radcliffe College in 1972 and an M.F.A. in writing from Columbia University in 1975. She was actively involved in Students for a Democratic Society and participated in notable student strikes at Harvard in 1969.
