Kim Barnes (born 1958) is a contemporary American author of fiction, memoir, and personal essays. She is best known for her work in the literary world and has served as the Poet Laureate of Idaho. Barnes was born in Lewiston, Idaho, and spent her early years living in logging camps and small communities in northern Idaho. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1976 and went on to earn a B.A. in English from Lewis-Clark State College, an M.A. in English from Washington State University, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Montana. Currently, Barnes teaches creative writing at the University of Idaho and resides in Idaho with her husband and three children.
