Laura Otis Biography
Laura Otis is an American historian of science and a Professor of English at Emory University. She graduated from Yale University with a B.S. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry in 1983, followed by an M.A. in Neuroscience from the University of California, San Francisco in 1988, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Cornell University in 1991. Otis is a guest scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. In 2000, she was recognized as a MacArthur Fellow. She has authored several books including 'Organic Memory: History and the Body in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries', 'Membranes: Metaphors of Invasion in Nineteenth-Century Literature, Science, and Politics', and 'Networking: Communicating with Bodies and Machines in the Nineteenth Century'.
