    Laurie Smith (born June 21, 1952) is an American law enforcement officer and former politician. She served as the 28th Sheriff of Santa Clara County, California from 1998 until her early retirement in 2022. Smith made history as the first female County Sheriff in the state's history. Born in Michigan, she moved to San Jose, California in 1969 to pursue higher education and a career in law enforcement. Smith holds a bachelor's degree in Administration of Justice from San Jose State University and a master's degree in Business Management from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She is a graduate of the California Command College, FBI National Academy, and National Executive Institute. Smith began her career as a matron at the Santa Clara County Jail in 1973, later becoming one of the first female permanent undercover vice cops.
