Lisa Perez Jackson is an American chemical engineer who served as the administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 2009 to 2013. She was born on February 8, 1962, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jackson graduated from Tulane University and Princeton University. She began her career at the EPA in 1987 as a staff-level engineer and later joined the EPA's regional office in New York City. In 2002, she became the Assistant Commissioner of Compliance and Enforcement and Assistant Commissioner for Land Use Management at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Jackson served as New Jersey's Commissioner of Environmental Protection and briefly as Chief of Staff for Governor Jon Corzine. She was the first African American to hold the position of EPA administrator.
