Mario Matthew Cuomo (June 15, 1932 – January 1, 2015) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 52nd governor of New York for three terms, from 1983 to 1994. He belonged to the Democratic Party and previously held positions as lieutenant governor of New York (1979-1982) and secretary of State of New York (1975-1978). Cuomo gained attention for his liberal views and powerful speeches, notably his keynote address at the 1984 Democratic National Convention. Despite being a potential front-runner for the Democratic presidential nominations in 1988 and 1992, he chose not to run. Cuomo was the father of former New York governor Andrew Cuomo and NewsNation anchor Christopher Cuomo.
