Mark Sanford is an American politician and author. He served as the U.S. representative for South Carolina's 1st congressional district from 1995 to 2001 and again from 2013 to 2019. Additionally, Sanford was the 115th governor of South Carolina from 2003 to 2011. A member of the Republican Party, he first entered Congress in 1994 and later decided to focus on running for governor. Sanford successfully won the 2002 gubernatorial election and was reelected in 2006. As governor, he made headlines by attempting to reject $700 million in stimulus funds for South Carolina from the federal Recovery Act. Sanford's political career has been marked by his affiliation with the Republican Party and his service in both Congress and the governorship of South Carolina.
