Marvin Gaye (April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984) was an American singer and songwriter who played a significant role in shaping the sound of Motown in the 1960s. Initially an in-house session drummer, Gaye went on to achieve great success as a solo artist with hits like 'Ain't That Peculiar', 'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)', and 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine'. He also collaborated with other Motown artists including Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross. In the 1970s, Gaye ventured into producing his own music, resulting in acclaimed albums like 'What's Going On' and 'Let's Get It On'. His later recordings had a profound influence on R&B subgenres such as quiet storm and neo soul. Gaye won his first two Grammy Awards for his song 'Sexual Healing' in 1982. He made his final televised appearances in 1983.
