Matthew David Bates (born 10 December 1986) is an English former football manager and former professional footballer. He played for various clubs including Hartlepool United, Bradford City, Bristol City, Darlington, Ipswich Town, Norwich City, and Middlesbrough. Born in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, Bates began his career at Manchester United's center of excellence in Birtley. He later joined his hometown club Middlesbrough and made his debut in 2004. Bates had a successful loan spell at Darlington and made a breakthrough, making 28 appearances. He is currently the assistant manager at Northern Premier League side Whitby Town and holds a UEFA B coaching license.
