Maziar Bahari is an Iranian-Canadian journalist, filmmaker, and human rights activist. Born on May 25, 1967, in Tehran, Iran, Bahari immigrated to Canada in 1988 to study communications after living in Pakistan since 1987. He worked as a reporter for Newsweek from 1998 to 2011. In 2009, he was detained by the Iranian government for four months. Bahari wrote a family memoir titled 'Then They Came for Me,' which became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into Jon Stewart's film 'Rosewater' in 2014. He is the founder of IranWire, a citizen journalism news site, as well as the campaigns Journalism Is Not A Crime and Paint the Change, an organization focused on education and public art.
