    Michael O'Flaherty is an Irish human rights lawyer and professor. He is known for his work as the Director of the European Union Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) since September 2015. Prior to this, O'Flaherty served as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee (HRC) from 2004 to 2012, overseeing compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). He was re-elected to the HRC with the highest number of votes in 2008. Additionally, O'Flaherty served as the Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) from 2011 to 2013. O'Flaherty hails from Salthill in Galway and comes from a family with a political background.
