Muriel Elizabeth Bowser, born on August 2, 1972, is an American politician and the current mayor of the District of Columbia. A member of the Democratic Party, Bowser has been serving as mayor since 2015. Prior to her mayoral role, she represented the 4th ward as a member of the Council of the District of Columbia from 2007 to 2015. Bowser is the second female mayor of the District of Columbia and the first woman to be reelected to that position. She has a strong political background, having been elected to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in 2004 and then to the council in 2007. Bowser has won multiple elections, including the 2014 mayoral election, where she defeated the incumbent mayor in the Democratic primary and won the general election with 55% of the vote.
