Oliver Gilbert Biography
Oliver Gilbert III is an American politician and current Miami-Dade County Commissioner for District 1. He is also the former mayor of Miami Gardens, the largest city in Florida with a majority African American population. Gilbert received a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Florida A&M University and a J.D. from University of Miami School of Law. He entered politics in 2000, working as a legislative aide for state representative Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall and later as deputy of policy for former US attorney general Janet Reno's gubernatorial campaign. After serving as a prosecutor and in private practice, Gilbert was appointed to the Miami Gardens council in 2008 and elected mayor in 2012.
