Howard made her professional stage debut at the Vineyard Theatre in New York City, playing the title character in J. M. Barrie's play Mary Rose, directed by Tina Landau. She then ventured into film and television, with guest-starring roles on popular shows like Medium and 90210. Howard made her feature film debut in the comedy Adventureland and went on to star in indie comedies like Virgin Alexander and Cheesecake Casserole. She also starred opposite Malcolm McDowell in the psychological thriller The Employer, for which she won Best Supporting Actress at the Los Angeles Movie Awards in 2013.
