Patrick Joseph Buchanan (born November 2, 1938) is an American paleoconservative author, political commentator, and politician. He served as an assistant and special consultant to U.S. presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan. Buchanan gained prominence as a key figure in the modern paleoconservative movement in America. In his political career, he sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1992 and 1996, campaigning against incumbent presidents George H. W. Bush and Bob Dole respectively. Buchanan also ran as the Reform Party's presidential nominee in 2000, emphasizing non-interventionism in foreign affairs and opposition to international trade agreements.
