Patrick J. Fitzgerald is an American lawyer and partner at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He was the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois from 2001 to 2012. Prior to his appointment, Fitzgerald served as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York from 1988 to 2001, where he participated in the prosecutions of Osama bin Laden, Abdel Rahman, and Ramzi Yousef. He also served as Chief of the Organized Crime-Terrorism Unit. Fitzgerald gained national attention as the special counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Special Counsel, leading the investigation of the Valerie Plame Affair and prosecuting Scooter Libby for perjury and obstruction of justice.
