Patrick Victor Martindale White (28 May 1912 – 30 September 1990) was a British-born Australian writer known for his contributions to literature. He published 12 novels, three short-story collections, and eight plays from 1935 to 1987. White's works were characterized by their use of humor, florid prose, shifting narrative perspectives, and stream of consciousness techniques. In 1973, he was honored with the Nobel Prize in Literature, being recognized for his epic and psychological narrative art that introduced a new continent into literature. He was also the first recipient of the Miles Franklin Award. White was born in London but moved to Sydney, Australia, with his family at a young age.
