Peter Welch

Peter Francis Welch is an American lawyer and politician serving as the junior United States senator from Vermont since 2023. Prior to his current position, he was a U.S. representative for VT's at-large congressional district from 2007 to 2023. Welch has been actively involved in Vermont politics for over four decades and has held various positions, including serving in the Vermont Senate from 1981 to 1989, where he was the Senate's president pro tempore from 1985 to 1989. He also ran for the United States House of Representatives in 1988 and was the Democratic nominee for governor of Vermont in 1990.
