Philip Glass is an American composer and pianist, born on January 31, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland. He is known for his influential work in the late 20th century, particularly in the field of minimalism. Glass's compositions often feature repetitive phrases and shifting layers, which he describes as 'music with repetitive structures.' He founded the Philip Glass Ensemble, which he no longer performs with, and has written numerous operas, chamber operas, musical theatre works, symphonies, concertos, string quartets, and other chamber music pieces. Additionally, Glass has composed scores for many films, with three of his film scores being nominated for Academy Awards. His family were Latvian and Russian-Jewish emigrants, and his father owned a record store.
