Philip Nott Ober (March 23, 1902 – September 13, 1982) was an American screen and stage actor, as well as a foreign service diplomat. Born and raised in White Plains, New York, Ober attended The Peddie School and Princeton University. After working in advertising, he pursued a career in acting, making his stage debut in 1931. Ober is best known for his roles in films such as From Here to Eternity (1953) and North by Northwest (1959). He also appeared in The Magnificent Yankee (1950), Broken Lance (1954), Torpedo Run (1958), and The Ugly American (1963). Ober occasionally played the straight man in comedic situations. He transitioned from acting to a career as a foreign service diplomat from 1954 to 1967.
