    Phyllis Annetta Frelich (February 29, 1944 – April 10, 2014) was a deaf American actress. She was the first deaf actor or actress to win a Tony Award. Born to deaf parents, Frelich attended the North Dakota School for the Deaf and later studied at Gallaudet College, where she completed a degree in library science. She was discovered by David Hays, one of the founders of the National Theater of the Deaf, and joined the theater company. In 1973, she moved to New York City and originated the leading female role in the Broadway production of Children of a Lesser God. Frelich made significant contributions to promoting deaf awareness and representation in the entertainment industry.
