    Preetinder Singh Bharara, born on October 13, 1968, is an Indian-born American lawyer and former federal prosecutor. He served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017. Bharara, known for his aggressive stance against public corruption and Wall Street crime, was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for five years before leading the Southern District of New York. Currently, he is a partner at the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. Bharara immigrated to the United States with his family in 1970 and graduated from Harvard College in 1990. He attended Columbia Law School and worked as a litigation associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher before entering the public sector as chief counsel to a senator.
