Robert Gene "Red" West (March 8, 1936 – July 18, 2017) was an American actor, film stuntman, and songwriter. He was known for being a close confidant and bodyguard for rock and roll singer Elvis Presley. West wrote the controversial book Elvis: What Happened? after being fired, in which he exposed Presley's dangerous drug dependence. West appeared in films such as Road House, where he played the role of Red, and in the 2008 independent film Goodbye Solo as William. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, West was an accomplished athlete, playing football in high school and junior college, and participating in the Golden Gloves championships as a boxer. He was married to Pat Boyd.
