    Richard Courtney Biography
    Richard Courtney is a British drama teacher, theatre scholar, and international expert in children's drama. Born on June 4, 1927, in Newmarket, England, he attended Culford School and the University of Leeds. During his education, he studied under Shakespeare scholar G. Wilson Knight and Pirandello scholar Frederick May. Courtney directed and appeared in numerous theatre productions both during his studies and after graduation, working with the Arts Theatre in Leeds and the Rep Theatre in Yorkshire. He married Rosemary Gale on December 21, 1953. Courtney also had a career in radio, playing various roles on BBC radio from 1956 to 1960. He taught drama at schools in England from 1952 to 1959 and served as Senior Lecturer in Drama at Trent Park College of Education until 1967. He later held positions as Associate Professor of Theatre at the University of Victoria from 1968 to 1971 and Professor of Drama at the University of Calgary from 1971 to 1974.
