Richard Grove
Richard Hugh Grove (21 July 1955 – 25 June 2020) was a British historian, environmental activist, and one of the contemporary founders of environmental history as an academic field. He is best known for his book, Green Imperialism: Colonial Expansion, Tropical Island Edens and the Origins of Environmentalism 1600–1860 (1995), which explored the environmental impacts of colonialism and the origins of early western ideas on environmentalism. Grove received his education at the Perse School, Cambridge, and went on to earn a BA in geography from Hertford College, Oxford, an MSc in Conservation biology from University College London, and a PhD in history from the University of Cambridge. He served as a Fellow of Clare Hall and College Lecturer at Churchill College, University of Cambridge from 1988 to 1990.
