Richard Leacock Biography
Richard Leacock (18 July 1921 – 23 March 2011) was a British-born documentary film director and one of the pioneers of direct cinema and cinéma vérité. Leacock grew up on his father's banana plantation in the Canary Islands before being sent to boarding schools in England. At the age of 11, he was inspired by a silent film about the Trans-Siberian Railway and decided to pursue filmmaking. Leacock wrote, directed, filmed, and edited his first film, Canary Bananas, at the age of 14. He later attended Dartington Hall School and became known for his innovative work in documentary filmmaking, pushing the boundaries of capturing reality on camera.
